How things change…

Since writing about the $10-a-d scheme that had many parents praising the low cost childcare, the government have paused the scheme. They have since acknowledged the frustrations of childcare centres, and the lack of funding to support them with this scheme.

Within the article is surmises that the plan was not quite right or ready for BC. Whilst the program has been seen to work in other provinces, here in BC it was not ready. Perhaps this is due to the prices for everything increases, and inflation affecting everything.

I personally feel that the system is wrong, and should be based on income. As many families with higher income take spaces for the $10-a-day; families on lower incomes are left struggling to find and pay for the ever increasing costs of childcare.

Hopefully, we as educators will be able to have input and feedback into future schemes that affect our daily work. Or the people making the decisions come down and spend some time in the classrooms, getting to know what is needed. Helping everyone to learn and develop the bigger picture.
